Support Nico Zayas
On April 25,2018 my world was shattered in a million pieces when my son Nicolas was found unconscious and not breathing after drowning in our bathroom toilet. He was rushed to the hospital while the paramedics fought to revive him. After performing CPR for over 30 minutes, doctors found a pulse and Nico came back to life. I was reborn again when God gave me back my son, my first and only child.
Doctors warned me that the damage to his brain was so severe that they did not expect him to survive. All the specialists tried to convince me to disconnect him from life support because he was basically brain dead and there was no hope for him. They informed me that Nico would never be a normal kid… he would never open his eyes, or eat by mouth, or smile, or talk, or walk or know I was even his mom. They assured me that his best option was to be disconnected instead having a life like that. But as a mother and a believer of God, I knew that if my son was here, it was because God had a purpose for him. I believed that just as he had provided a miracle by allowing my son to come back to life after being dead for 30 mins, I know God will finish what he started and allow my son to enjoy life like every other kid. I am blessed and grateful for God’s grace.
Nico was given a G-Tube which allowed him to receive his daily nutrition, as well as a trach, connected to a ventilator which helped him breath. Nico spent time in three different hospitals and a step-down rehabilitation facility. On January 7, 2019, Nico was finally able to come home to live with his family again. He is now able to breathe without the ventilator for 15-30 mins each day and he’s making sounds and even opening his eyes a little.
My goal as a mother is to provide Nico with every opportunity for a more independent life. I recently discovered Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and learned that it has been extremely successful in treating people who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, such as near drowning. It stimulates stem cell production eight times over what the body can do on its own. It can also improve the client’s fine and gross motor skills, speech, thinking (cognition), memory, physical healing, etc. I’ve recently learned that there is a non-profit facility in Northwest Ohio that we can go to called Sara’s Garden. Sara’s Garden specializes in working with children with traumatic brain injuries.
Even though Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been very successful in treating individuals with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), insurance companies in the United States do not recognize it as being therapeutic for the treatment of TBI and therefore will not cover the cost for treatments. That is why I could really use your help. HBOT for Nico is only $100 per treatment at Sara’s Garden. However, since my plan is for him to receive at least 40 HBOT treatments that cost adds up quickly, and doesn’t even cover our cost for travel, lodging and food.
If you could assist us with the cost (or even just part of the cost) of a single $100 HBOT treatment it would help reduce our overall expenses greatly. 100% of the funds received go into an account in Nico’s name and will be used for his treatments. Any contribution made would be considered a tax-deductible donation as Sara’s Garden is a 501(c)(3) non-profit facility. Checks can be made out to Sara’s Garden with Nico’s name on a sheet of paper accompanying the check. Please do NOT write his name directly on the check. You can also donate online via credit card by clicking on the DONATE NOW button below.
By the grace of God, Nico is grasping onto life and still fighting every single day to stay with us. I know that where there’s life there’s hope, and we his family look forward to Nico being able to receive HBOT at Sara’s Garden.
