2026 Summer Programs

2026 Summer Programs

Our 2026 Summer Enrichment programs are quickly approaching and we are currently taking registrations for both our Wauseon and Springfield locations.

2026 Summer Program Dates:

  • Wauseon: June 1-26 (Registration deadline is May 1)
  • Springfield: July 6 – August 31 (Registration deadline is June 1)

If you are considering either of these programs, now is the time to register and arrange funding.

Sara’s Garden offers amazing summer intervention programs for children with disabilities. These month-long programs deliver inclusive therapies that provide interventions for individuals with a variety of conditions and disabilities.

Our caring and experienced staff of licensed therapists, conductors and paraprofessionals create unique, intensive therapy-based programs that are tailored to the needs of each participant and are designed to enhance your child’s developmental skills. This approach not only helps your child to work towards greater independence, it also keeps the regression of skills and development that typically occurs over the summer months at bay.

Goals of these programs include:

Improving Interpersonal Skills:
  • Relationship building
  • Responding to his/her name
  • Learning the names of peers
  • Basic conversation skills
  • Behavioral skill development
Improving Fine and Gross Motor Skills:
  • Range of motion
  • Sitting and standing
  • Walking and transfers
  • Self feeding
  • Independent living skills
Improving Language Skills:
  • Vocabulary knowledge and understanding
  • Basic concepts
  • Following verbally presented directions
  • Improving story comprehension
  • Improve Reading/Writing Skills
Improving Social Skills:
  • Greetings
  • Turn Taking
  • Initiating communication
  • Informing and directing others
  • Requesting

Our summer intervention programs also provide support for children who use augmentative communication systems (low tech or high tech) who have language and literacy skills and need more experience with peer to peer social skills.

We serve clients with (but not limited to): ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, CDKL5, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Near Drowning, Seizure Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorders, Spina Bifida, Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Additional information is being compiled on potential funding and grant options for families in need of financial support.

Support Rylee Hannah

Support Rylee Hannah

In many ways, Rylee is a typical 18-year-old girl. She rolls her eyes, sighs in annoyance, loves fashion, glitter, music, and food. She enjoys people, participating in an adaptive ice skating program, high school, swimming & also playing Miracle League Baseball!

We’ve been attending the summer program for over ten years. Rylee has made significant progress while being involved in the conductive education program and hyperbaric oxygen sessions that they offer. Due to a very rare genetic disorder known as CDKL5, Rylee is unable to verbally communicate, to walk, and has very limited motor skills. She also suffers from epilepsy. She is wheelchair bound and requires full assistance from a caregiver. The intensive therapy that is offered to her, helps significantly improve her strength and ability to help with transfers and everyday routine. This summer program successfully keeps her strong and she also gains a lot cognitively to get us through the summer months without school and the once a week therapy that she receives.

By the time Rylee was 6 months old, it was apparent she was not developing as a typical infant. She could not roll over, hold her bottle, sit up unassisted nor was she making any noises or mirrored gestures. We visited more than five children’s hospitals all over Ohio where she was tested for countless conditions. The result was always the same: Rylee had nothing wrong with her and was just a little developmentally behind.

When Rylee was 5 years old, we were shown a YouTube video about a very rare disease known as CDKL5 (Cyclin-Dependent Kinase-Like 5). CDKL5 is a gene that provides instructions for making a protein and is essential for normal brain development. Symptoms involve hand ringing, infantile spasms or seizure-like activity, delayed gross and fine motor skills, digestive issues, sleep apnea and more. A quick blood test and a two-week waiting period would show that Rylee indeed had CDKL5. We FINALLY had a diagnosis! I remember being relieved that she had a diagnosis, that we could finally have some sort of direction as to a plan for her life. Over the years, we have spent countless hours each year driving to and from doctor visits and therapy sessions.

About 12 years ago, we discovered Sara’s Garden in Wauseon Ohio. Sara’s Garden provides Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Conductive Education, and Sensory Integration services. After much research, I was convinced that these services would be crucial for Rylee’s development. Rylee has been a part of the program and treatments at Sara’s Garden several times. Every time she attends, she gains improvement with her strength and her communication abilities.

We look forward to attending this camp every summer. Unfortunately, in the United States insurance will often not reimburse for HBOT treatment or Conductive Education for CDKL5, even though there is an acknowledgment that it may be therapeutic. That is why I could really use your help. HBOT for Rylee is only $100 per treatment, however, she will complete 30 HBOT treatments totaling around $3,500. Additionally, Conductive Education and Sensory Integration during June for Rylee this year is $1250 a week. She will attend five days a week for 4 weeks…

As you can imagine, the cost quickly adds up. Aside from those cost, there will be travel, housing and additional food cost as well which the family will also be responsible for out of pocket.

If you could assist us with the cost (or even just part of the cost) of a single $100 HBOT treatment or part of the intervention services, it would help reduce our overall expenses greatly. 100% of the funds received go into an account in Rylee’s name and will be used for her treatments. Any contribution made would be considered a tax-deductible donation as Sara’s Garden is a 501(c)(3) non-profit facility. Checks can be made out to Sara’s Garden with Rylee’s name on a sheet of paper accompanying the check. Please do NOT write her name directly on the check. You can also donate online via credit card clicking on the DONATE NOW button below.

Thank you so much for considering supporting Rylee and even more for your continuous love and support of Rylee!

Dear family and friends,

As you know, I’m a Christian preschool teacher, and I’m really hoping to teach again in the fall.

In the fall of 2023, I had COVID. I had difficulty breathing for 3 months. As time went on, it became manageable, but I was never back to normal. I could work but I tired easily and could not exercise. In March of 2025, I noticed my breathing was becoming much, much worse. I was unable to work, go to church, or even complete simple household tasks such as cooking and cleaning. Even showering made me short of breath and trying to go up and down stairs was terribly hard on me.

Doctors performed many tests, including a chest x-ray, CT of my lungs, echocardiogram, EKG, and several pulmonary function tests. I’ve seen 3 pulmonologists and a cardiologist and have been to the University of Michigan and to the Long COVID Clinic in Fort Wayne, IN. I tried pulmonary rehab, but at my first visit my blood pressure dropped sharply after just 4 minutes of exercise, and I came very close to fainting. I have even tried several alternative treatments but have not had any success.

One of the toughest parts of this journey is that I found out that I am allergic to albuterol and any type of steroid, so I have been unable to even get temporary relief. I go out occasionally but am housebound for the most part. Recently, we’ve learned about significant research that supports the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for Long COVID recovery. My husband suggested I check into HBOT, and my doctor concurred. I’m praying that this is my answer. I want nothing more than to be able to teach again in the fall.

HBOT decreases inflammation that Long COVID caused which has affected neurotransmitters and their ability to communicate. This therapy also helps to heal damage that the condition has caused near the heart. HBOT acts as an antiviral, anti-bacterial, and antifungal agent. It has been shown to reduce pain significantly, alleviate sleep dysfunction, and reduce cognitive impairment. It also increases energy, and increases the body’s white blood cell activity, boosting the immune system and promoting healing.

I learned that there is a non-profit facility right here in Northwest Ohio that I could go to called Sara’s Garden. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for my situation is only $150 per treatment at Sara’s Garden (as opposed to $1,500-2,500 per treatment at a hospital). Unfortunately, in the United States insurance companies do not recognize HBOT as being therapeutic for the treatment of Long COVID and will therefore not cover the cost of the treatments.

If you could assist me with the cost (or even just part of the cost) of a single $150 treatment it would help reduce my overall expenses greatly. 100% of the funds received will go into an account in my name and will be used for my treatments. Any contribution made would be considered a tax-deductible donation as Sara’s Garden is a 501(c)(3) non-profit facility. Checks can be made out to Sara’s Garden with my name written on a sheet of paper accompanying the check. Please DO NOT write my name directly on the check itself. You can also donate securely online via credit card by clicking on the DONATE NOW button below.

Thank you so much for considering making donations towards my treatments at Sara’s Garden. I am grateful for your thoughtfulness.

Sincerely,

Susan MacDonald (Sue)

Safety is No Accident

Safety is No Accident

At Sara’s Garden, our mission to provide safe and effective Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) treatments is no accident. The safety of our clients and staff is our top priority. Hyperbaric oxygen chambers are considered safe when used appropriately with trained staff who follow strict safety protocols. These safety protocols are crucial because increased oxygen concentration and pressure, while therapeutic, can also pose risks like ear and sinus pain, middle ear injuries, oxygen toxicity and fire hazards. Following these protocols helps to minimize these risks and maximize the benefits of HBOT.

Not all hyperbaric chambers are the same. It is important to understand the difference in how these chambers operate and the benefits you receive so that you may safely achieve your health goals.

Multiplace chambers, such as the one used here at Sara’s Garden, are the safest type of chambers in existence. Still, given the oxygen rich environment, a risk of fire and injury to the client in the chamber exists if you do not adhere to sound safety and maintenance protocols. Multiplace chambers are pressurized with ambient air, and oxygen is delivered through masks or hoods. This reduces the likelihood of a fire compared to monoplace chambers, which are pressurized with 100% oxygen.

The medical grade oxygen we use here at Sara’s Garden fills the client’s hood during the time of treatment only. This also reduces the chance for oxygen toxicity. While oxygen is beneficial for healing, high concentrations and pressures can lead to oxygen toxicity. Multiplace chambers reduce this risk by delivering oxygen through the masks or hoods since the chamber itself is pressurized with air.

The greatest risk of fire present in a multiplace hyperbaric chamber comes from unsafe items being brought into the chamber. Staff at Sara’s Garden do a pre-treatment safety check prior to anyone going into the chamber to avoid any unsafe, banned items from going into the chamber and potentially causing a spark.

Multiplace chambers hold more than one client at a time. This allows us to provide a health care professional attending to the clients in the chamber. The inside attendant aides the clients with any issues that may arise. Clients walk into the chamber and sit on their seat. Clients may also stand up and stretch during the treatment. Having more than one client in the chamber at a time, helps clients pass time by chatting with each other as they develop a sense of camaraderie, many becoming friends long after the treatments are completed.

The four registered nurses at Sara’s Garden are all Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurses. (CHRN). According to the Baromedical Nurses Association, hyperbaric oxygen therapy requires nurses to have a heightened degree of patient assessment skills, advanced knowledge of specific disease processes, and the technical ability not elsewhere seen in nursing environments. CHRN signifies that a registered nurse has made the commitment to provide the best care for hyperbaric clients and to value education and nursing research in the hyperbaric community. We also have an EMT/Paramedic who is a great asset due to her knowledge in emergency care and assessment of clients.

The other type of chamber available is a monoplace hyperbaric chamber. One client at a time goes into a monoplace chamber at a time. The healthcare professional is outside the chamber. Clients who may have serious medical diagnosis may not be a candidate for a monoplace chamber since they don’t have an inside attendant to aide them in any medical or health issues that might arise. A claustrophobic client may not be able to go into a monoplace chamber due to the small space. Another disadvantage of a monoplace chamber is it poses a higher risk of fire. The entire chamber is pressurized with pure oxygen, not ambient air, so the risk of fire is much higher than in a multiplace chamber. Clients and staff need to be very diligent to follow strict safety protocols to maintain a safe environment.

While monoplace chambers are considered safe for human occupancy, these chambers carry the inherent dangers of creating a pressurized pure oxygen chamber environment. Monoplace chambers are as therapeutically effective as multiplace chambers. However, they are far more restrictive, as you cannot interact with others except to speak with a technician via an intercom system. Treatment in a monoplace chamber has often been described as being very claustrophobic and lonely. These factors lead to a high percentage of patients failing to comply with their HBOT program.

While both monoplace and multiplace chambers offer the same benefits of HBOT, multiplace chambers are often considered safer, especially for critically ill patients, due to the use of air pressurization, improved oxygen delivery, ventilation and circulation systems, patient interaction, and the ability to provide the highest level of patient support. No matter which type of chamber is used, clients receive 100% oxygen under pressure, thus allowing the body to begin the healing process.

No matter what you’ve been told, there is hope… for this and many other conditions. HBOT is treatment without drugs… without surgery… without pain.

2025 Drive Fore Hope Recap

2025 Drive Fore Hope Recap

This year’s Drive Fore Hope charity golf scramble was a huge success! That could not have been possible without the support of all who participated, donated or volunteered their time to be a part of this incredible event.

Thirty two (32) teams of golfers were able to play the event under absolutely gorgeous, sunny (albeit chilly) skies. We were blessed to receive sponsorships from our generous partner organizations. We’re so thankful to the staff, volunteers and students who helped make the event run so efficiently.

This year’s winning team was from K & L Farms. Pictured to the side is: Larry Langenderfer, Rick Langenderfer, Maggie Langenderfer, Dick Langenderfer and Travis Whitaker.

A commemorative brick will be created for them and placed in the patio of our playground at NHA.

Thank you everyone for making this event possible.

A Special Thank You from Handcrafted Hope

A Special Thank You from Handcrafted Hope

Our NHA middle and high school students from the Handcrafted Hope Program would like to thank everyone that came out and supported their sale event on March 27. The event was a great success in so many ways. We couldn’t have done it without the amazing support of our staff, students, volunteers, community members, families and friends.

This year we had a unique item at the sale:  Custom laser cut picture frames. A donor purchased a laser for our program and the kids have had a blast learning to cut and engrave items. For this year’s event, we provided order forms for attendees to purchase their own custom picture frames. The students did a great job of fulfilling those orders.
