From Rash to Recovery

From Rash to Recovery

Most people associate shingles with intense nerve pain, weeks of discomfort, and a long recovery. While every case is different, early recognition and appropriate medical care are important. For one Sara’s Garden nurse, combining conventional treatment with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) led to a recovery that exceeded her expectations.

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox—the varicella-zoster virus. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body’s nerve tissue and can reactivate years or even decades later. The condition typically begins with tingling, burning, or itching, followed by a painful rash with fluid-filled blisters that usually appears on one side of the body. Although shingles most commonly affects older adults and those with weakened immune systems, it can occur in otherwise healthy individuals as well.

Before developing shingles, Rebekah considered herself healthy and rarely needed to visit a doctor. On a Saturday evening, she noticed a small red rash on the left side of her chest, about the size of a quarter. The area was itchy and had developed a few small blisters. Along with the rash, she experienced mild flu-like symptoms, including nausea, body aches, and significant fatigue. Initially, she assumed it was simply a bug bite and treated it with an over-the-counter anti-itch cream.

By the following day, however, the rash had grown larger and her symptoms had worsened. Suspecting shingles, Rebekah went to an urgent care clinic where the diagnosis was confirmed. She was prescribed the antiviral medication Acyclovir. Although antiviral medications are most effective when started within the first 72 hours after symptoms appear, her physician explained that the medication might provide limited benefit because the virus had likely progressed beyond its most responsive stage. She was also told to expect the illness to last at least two weeks.

As a nurse at Sara’s Garden, Rebekah was already familiar with the specialized, comprehensive client services available through the center. Her supervisor encouraged her to begin Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as soon as possible. HBOT increases the amount of oxygen delivered throughout the body by having clients breathe 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. The therapy has been shown to support many different conditions and injuries, including wound healing, inflammation, and tissue repair. While HBOT is not a standard treatment for shingles itself here in the United States, some clients and providers have explored its use as a adjunctive treatment to help the body heal.

Rebekah noticed encouraging changes within just 24 hours of beginning treatment. The redness around the rash had diminished, and the blisters had already begun to shrink. She completed a total of six HBOT sessions over nine days, carefully monitoring her progress throughout the treatment period.

By the completion of her sixth treatment, the improvement was remarkable. The itching had resolved, the swelling was gone, and only minimal redness and blistering remained. Perhaps the most significant benefit, according to Rebekah, was how quickly the shingles resolved. Her illness lasted less than the minimum two-week course she had initially been told to expect.

One aspect of Rebekah’s experience stood out even more. Unlike many people who develop shingles, she never experienced the severe nerve pain commonly associated with the condition. Shingles pain can sometimes persist for months after the rash heals, a complication known as postherpetic neuralgia. Fortunately, Rebekah did not develop this painful complication, and she was able to return to feeling like herself much sooner than anticipated.

Looking back, Rebekah says the greatest benefit of incorporating Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy into her care was the shortened recovery time. When she showed family members before-and-after photos of the affected area, they were amazed by how quickly it had healed. While every individual’s experience with shingles is unique and treatment outcomes can vary, Rebekah is grateful for the care she received and says she would not hesitate to choose HBOT again if she were ever to face shingles in the future.

No matter what you’ve been told, there is hope… for this and many other conditions. HBOT is treatment without drugs… without surgery… without pain.

Handcrafted Holiday Magic

Handcrafted Holiday Magic

The holiday season is a time for traditions, memories, and giving; and this year, New Horizons Academy is excited to once again share a special tradition that brings all three together!

Our custom, handmade Christmas ornaments are back, lovingly crafted by talented students from all three New Horizons Academy campuses. Each ornament is a unique keepsake, thoughtfully created by our students to capture the warmth and spirit of the season.

This year, students have more than 100 different layer options to choose from, making it easier than ever to create an ornament that is truly one-of-a-kind!

And we’re excited to introduce a beautiful new option this year: acrylic layers! Ornaments can feature natural wood and/or acrylic layers, creating a stunning look that is perfect for any Christmas tree.

You can choose to leave your ornament in its beautiful natural wood and acrylic finish, or add an extra special touch by having it hand painted by our student artists.

When you select the hand-painted option, our young artists will put their creativity and holiday spirit to work, creating a one-of-a-kind ornament just for you. Using tasteful holiday colors and plenty of imagination, each piece becomes a personal keepsake that is uniquely yours.

Want to make your ornament even more special?

We’re offering FREE custom personal laser engraving on the back of wood and wood/acrylic combo ornaments. Add a name, date, short message, or other personal touch to create a keepsake you’ll treasure for years to come.

We know many of our students have family and friends who live farther away but would still love to purchase one of these awesome keepsakes. This year, we are offering an online ornament portal where supporters can order ornaments and have them shipped directly to them if they do not live close enough for pickup.

These ornaments aren’t just decorations—they’re a celebration of what our students can accomplish when given the opportunity to learn, create, and share their talents.

All proceeds from the ornament sale will support the ongoing purchase of equipment and supplies for our Handcrafted Hope Family and Consumer Science program. With every ornament purchased, you’re helping provide our students with meaningful opportunities to learn new skills, express their creativity, build confidence, and grow.

Quantities and time are limited, so don’t wait! Place your order today and help support student creativity and school programs with every purchase.

All ornament orders must be placed by Monday, November 9, 2026.

Unable to attend the Christmas musical? No problem! Ornaments will be delivered to each NHA campus in Wauseon and Springfield by Thursday, December 17.

Whether you’re purchasing an ornament for your own family, giving one as a gift, or starting a new holiday tradition, you’re taking home something truly special while supporting our students.

A New Ride for NHA!

A New Ride for NHA!

We have some exciting news at New Horizons Academy… a new-to-us bus has officially joined our school family! And we couldn’t be more excited about what this incredible resource will mean for our students.

We were able to purchase this beautiful bus for just $10,000, making it an exceptional addition to our school. Even better, the bus is equipped with a hydraulic wheelchair lift, providing accessible transportation for our students who use wheelchairs. It can accommodate 26 students and 3 wheelchairs, giving us much more flexibility as we plan activities and experiences beyond our school walls.

The bus will be put to good use in so many ways! It will provide transportation for class trips, vocational study opportunities, community outings, and Christmas musical practices, just to name a few. Having our own accessible transportation will open the door to experiences that help our students learn, grow, build independence, and participate more fully in our school community.

You may notice that it doesn’t look quite like a traditional school bus. The bus is no longer school-bus yellow—it has been beautifully painted white to meet Ohio standards for a multifunction activity bus. And we have to say, it looks absolutely amazing! It is so clean and well-kept that it almost looks brand new.

We are incredibly thankful for this opportunity and excited about all the places this bus will take our students—both literally and figuratively. From learning in the community to preparing for performances and creating lasting memories on class trips, this bus will be an important part of life at New Horizons Academy for years to come.

We can’t wait to see where it takes us!

NHA Coffee FUNdraiser

NHA Coffee FUNdraiser

Dear New Horizons Academy Students & Families,

It’s time for our 2026 New Horizons Academy Coffee FUNdraiser! This year, you can upgrade your breakfast or snack routine by also purchasing homemade granola and chocolate covered espresso beans!

As in years past, students can continue to use their coffee order sheets to take orders from family, friends, neighbors, and other local supporters. Once the order arrives, students will deliver those orders directly to the people who supported them.

But this year, we’re adding a brand-new option!

We know many of our students have family and friends who live farther away but would still love to support New Horizons Academy. This year, we are offering an online Coffee FUNdraiser Portal where supporters can order coffee and delicious snack bundles with shipping already included in the price.

A New Way to Support Our Students!

If a supporter lives too far away for a student to personally deliver their order, simply send them our online ordering link:

New Horizons Academy Coffee FUNdraiser Portal: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/saras-garden-coffee-fundraiser

Through the online portal, supporters can choose from our available coffee and snack bundles and place their order online. The cost of shipping is already included, so they don’t have to worry about paying for or arranging shipping separately.

And most importantly:

If an order is placed through the online portal, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SHIP OR DELIVER IT! We will take care of getting those online orders packaged and shipped directly to the customer.

This gives our students the best of both worlds:

  • Local supporters: Use your order sheet → You receive the coffee → You deliver it to your supporter.
  • Long-distance supporters: Send them the online portal → They order and pay online → We ship their order directly to them.

We hope this new option makes it easier for students to reach even more friends and family members who want to support New Horizons Academy and the amazing work happening here.

Thank you for helping make this fundraiser a success and, most importantly, for helping us continue to provide meaningful opportunities and experiences for our students!

Happy fundraising—and happy brewing!

With appreciation,
New Horizons Academy

Looking Ahead to Summer 2027

Looking Ahead to Summer 2027

We know it may feel a little early to be talking about summer 2027. We’ve just wrapped up another summer and are settling into fall, cooler temperatures, and, of course, our favorite pumpkin-spiced drinks! But we wanted to give our Sara’s Garden families an early heads-up about an important change to next summer’s schedule.

Based on the wonderful feedback we’ve received from families regarding the timing of our programs, we are excited to share that both the Wauseon and Springfield Summer Enrichment Programs will be held June 7 – July 2, 2027.

By offering both programs simultaneously in June, we hope to give families the month of July to enjoy vacations, family activities, sports, camps, and other summer adventures without having to work around our program schedule.

While the timing is changing, the heart of our Summer Enrichment Program remains the same!

Our caring and experienced team of licensed therapists, conductors, and paraprofessionals will continue to create unique, intensive, therapy-based programs tailored to the individual needs of each participant. Through a combination of amazing therapies and engaging activities, our programs are designed to strengthen developmental skills, encourage greater independence, and help minimize the regression of skills that can often occur during the summer months.

These month-long programs deliver inclusive therapies that provide interventions for individuals with a variety of conditions and disabilities.

Goals of these programs include:

Improving Interpersonal Skills:
  • Relationship building
  • Responding to his/her name
  • Learning the names of peers
  • Basic conversation skills
  • Behavioral skill development
Improving Fine and Gross Motor Skills:
  • Range of motion
  • Sitting and standing
  • Walking and transfers
  • Self feeding
  • Independent living skills
Improving Language Skills:
  • Vocabulary knowledge and understanding
  • Basic concepts
  • Following verbally presented directions
  • Improving story comprehension
  • Improve Reading/Writing Skills
Improving Social Skills:
  • Greetings
  • Turn Taking
  • Initiating communication
  • Informing and directing others
  • Requesting

Our summer intervention programs also provide support for children who use augmentative communication systems (low tech or high tech) who have language and literacy skills and need more experience with peer-to-peer social skills.

We serve clients with (but not limited to): ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, CDKL5, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Near Drowning, Seizure Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorders, Spina Bifida, Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury.

Applications for the 2027 Summer Enrichment Program will open at the beginning of the year. In the meantime, now is the perfect time for families to begin planning and exploring funding options. Year-end giving opportunities, financial assistance, grants, and other sources of support can take time to arrange, so getting a head start now can help families be prepared when applications open.

For more information about the 2027 Summer Enrichment Program, funding opportunities, or how to begin planning, please contact Michelle Nagle at 833.668.7272 or michellen@sarasgarden.org.

We’re happy to help families navigate the process and look forward to another wonderful summer of growth, connection, learning, and fun—and we’re excited to spend June 2027 with you!
